The High Court has issued a rule asking why each of 208 expatriates, who allegedly faced persecution abroad for their role in the July movement, should not be granted Tk 2.5 million compensation upon returning to the country.
The order was passed on Monday (May 4) by a High Court bench headed by Justice Fatema Najib.
The court directed the Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and other concerned authorities to respond to the rule.
During the hearing, lawyer Barrister HM Sanzid Siddique appeared on behalf of the petitioners.
Speaking after the hearing, he said:
“Among the 208 individuals, 57 migrant workers were sentenced in the United Arab Emirates during the July movement.”
He further added:
“These 57 individuals, along with all 208 expatriates, have already been recognized by the government as July fighters.”
The court’s rule now seeks clarification on why compensation should not be granted to them as demanded in the petition.
