Tarique Rahman Meets Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman;

In a significant development for Bangladesh’s political landscape, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman met with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman at the latter’s Bashundhara residence on Sunday evening.

Following the meeting, Shafiqur Rahman hailed the visit as a “historic moment for our national politics,” congratulating the BNP leader in advance as the future Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

A New Chapter in Political Relations

The Jamaat Ameer welcomed the visit, expressing hope that it marks the beginning of a new chapter based on dialogue, responsibility, political maturity, and mutual respect.

“I dream of building a Bangladesh that is free from fascism, sovereign, and established on justice and equity,” Shafiqur Rahman stated in a Facebook post following the meeting.

He reaffirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami is committed to working alongside its coalition partners to establish a prosperous, stable, and modern state founded on democratic values and constitutional governance.

Assurances on Security and Minority Protection

During their discussion, the Jamaat Ameer emphasized the need for stability and security for all citizens. He noted that Tarique Rahman assured him of taking effective measures to prevent post-election violence and any attacks on opposition activists and minority communities.

“Our expectation is that no citizen should fall victim to fear or insecurity,” the Jamaat leader added.

Role of the Opposition

Regarding the future government, Shafiqur Rahman stated that Jamaat-e-Islami would extend full cooperation on issues of national interest. However, he emphasized that as a principled opposition party, they would remain uncompromising in fulfilling their constitutional duties.

“Our objective is not conflict but correction; not obstruction but observation,” he said, advocating for a parliament that protects citizen rights and ensures justice.

The meeting was also attended by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam, and Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Abdullah Muhammad Taher.
