Rohingya Youth Nur Mustafa to Be Recognized as ‘July Martyr’

The government has taken the initiative to recognize Nur Mustafa, a Rohingya youth who was killed during the anti-dictatorship movement in 2024, as a ‘July Martyr’.

The announcement came from a Facebook post made by Mahfuz Alam, Information Advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, on Wednesday afternoon. The post was later shared by Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

According to the post, Mahfuz Alam presented the proposal for Nur Mustafa’s recognition at a cabinet meeting held on June 22. The Directorate of Mass Uprisings is currently working on the official recognition, with a formal notification expected to be issued soon.

Nur Mustafa, a 17-year-old class 10 student at Darus Salam Dakhil Madrasa, was shot on August 5, 2024, during a demonstration in front of Eidgaon Police Station in Cox’s Bazar. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital the following day.

Local sources report that Nur Mustafa’s father, Shafiul Alam, migrated from Myanmar to Bangladesh in 1992 and settled permanently in the Eidgaon area of Cox’s Bazar. Born in Bangladesh, Nur Mustafa was actively involved in the movement that ultimately claimed his life.
