Journalist Anis Alamgir Shown Arrested in ACC Graft Case

Senior journalist Anis Alamgir has been shown arrested in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.

On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Fayez passed the order following a petition filed by the ACC. Public Prosecutor Tariqul Islam confirmed the development to the media.

Court Proceedings

Anis Alamgir was brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court lock-up at approximately 9:50 AM today. Around 11:00 AM, he was produced before the court under tight security, wearing a helmet and a bulletproof jacket, with his hands handcuffed. About 15 to 20 police personnel escorted him to the courtroom.

The security gear, including the helmet and handcuffs, was removed before he was placed in the dock. During the hearing, which commenced at 12:20 PM, Anis Alamgir stood behind the dock while his legal counsel participated in the proceedings. After the hearing, the court formally ordered him to be shown arrested in the graft case and sent him back to the lock-up.

Details of the ACC Case

The ACC investigation officer, Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman, had filed the application for the arrest on January 25. Earlier, on January 15, the commission filed the case against the journalist on charges of acquiring illegal assets worth approximately Tk 3.26 crore and money laundering.

According to the case statement:

  • Total Assets Found: Tk 4.09 crore (including Tk 25 lakh in immovable property and Tk 3.84 crore in movable assets).
  • Total Expenditure: Tk 15.90 lakh (including family expenses).
  • Total Acquired Wealth: Tk 4.25 crore.
  • Legitimate Income: Only Tk 99.09 lakh was found from known sources, including past savings, talk show fees, consultancy, and bank interests.
  • Discrepancy: Assets worth Tk 3,26,48,938 (approximately 77% of his total wealth) were found to be beyond his declared income.

Previous Arrest and Detention

Anis Alamgir has been in custody since mid-December. On December 14, 2025, he was picked up by the Detective Branch (DB) from a gym in Dhanmondi for questioning. He was later shown arrested in a separate case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Following a five-day remand in that case, a court sent him to jail on December 20, where he has remained since.
