DHAKA, August 29, 2026 — Civic and political platform Alternatives placed a 9-point charter of demands before the nation today, calling for comprehensive constitutional reforms, immediate justice for the July massacre victims, and robust economic and environmental sovereignty.
The demands were officially declared by Alternatives organizer Mahfuj Alam during a press meet titled “State of the Nation” held in the capital.
Issuing a statement on behalf of the platform’s national organizing committee, the leadership expressed deep concern over the current political trajectory. The statement noted that despite the immense sacrifices made by the July martyrs and the general public, the expected “New Bangladesh” has yet to materialize.
The committee evaluated that the underlying fascist framework remains largely intact despite the change in government, warning that the old regime risks returning in a new package. In light of these concerns, Alternatives urged the public to exercise free speech, build organized networks, sustain active protests, and prepare for resistance if necessary.
The 9-point charter presented at the press conference includes:
- Constitutional & Structural Reform: Formulate a framework for state structural reform and launch economic restructuring to eliminate wealth inequality.
- July Massacre & Enforced Disappearances: Ensure justice for the July killings, publish a full state-recognized registry for victims of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings from 2009 to 2024, and accord formal recognition to all participants of the July uprising.
- Human Rights & Accountability: Fully operationalize the Human Rights Commission, Disappearance Commission, and SRB laws to guarantee independent investigations, rule of law, and fair compensation for victims.
- Energy Sovereignty: Resolve the power crisis by holding individuals accountable for non-competitive quick rental contracts, while reducing reliance on oligarchs, imports, and foreign corporations to build renewable energy sovereignty.
- Healthcare Ordinances: Pass the “Healthcare Workers and Institutions Protection Ordinance 2025” and “Patient Protection and Remedy Ordinance 2025” into law, while regulating essential drug prices and adopting a balanced national drug policy.
- Rights & Cultural Diversity: Implement the recommendations of the Women’s Commission, curb sexual abuse and child exploitation, safeguard pluralistic expression, and combat cultural fascism.
- Labor & Agriculture: Fully implement the recommendations of the Labor Commission alongside Labor Act 2026, reopen closed industrial units, resolve fertilizer shortages, and provide state support for farmers suffering from critical illnesses. Ensure complete transparency and community involvement before privatizing state-owned jute or sugar mills.
- Education & Youth Employment: Form an independent Education Commission to overhaul the academic system. Introduce partisan-free recruitment processes, expand skill development and funding for young entrepreneurs, and guarantee safe, gender-sensitive, and fair workplace standards in the private sector.
- Environmental Protection & Climate Justice: Cancel all development projects damaging ecosystems, execute climate-resilient initiatives in affected zones, and establish comprehensive rehabilitation programs for populations displaced by floods, river erosion, and natural disasters.
