Meghmallar Basu, Education and Research Secretary of the Bangladesh Chatra Union’s central committee, and Vice-President Maeen Ahmed have resigned from their posts. The announcement was confirmed in a press release signed by General Secretary Shimul Kumbhakar on Saturday.
The statement noted: “The resignation letters submitted by Meghmallar Basu and Maeen Ahmed have been accepted by the central parliament.”
Link to New Political Platform
Speculation about Basu’s political future had been ongoing since the launch of the Network for People Action (NPA) earlier this year. The platform introduced a 99-member list, where Basu’s name was linked. He has now confirmed that he has left Chhatra Union to join NPA.
Organizational Conflict
The press release explained that involvement in two political organizations simultaneously could create “conflict of interest” and organizational contradictions. On this basis, both leaders voluntarily submitted their resignations, which the central committee accepted after review.
In a related decision, Vice-President Nazifa Jannat was also relieved of her duties due to similar organizational realities.
Chatra Union’s Statement
The Union emphasized that the move was necessary to preserve its ideals and organizational transparency. It stated that holding leadership roles in multiple political groups contradicts the Union’s principles.
The statement added: “Chatra Union respectfully remembers the contributions of the outgoing leaders during their tenure and wishes them success in their future political and personal lives.”
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to continue working for the right to education, secularism, democracy, anti-imperialist struggle, and the establishment of a discrimination-free socialist Bangladesh.
