National Citizens Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has issued a stern warning against the use of force on students, stating that “the consequences of raising hands on students will not be good.” He made the statement while addressing a street rally in the Ghoshpara and Rajarhat areas of Kurigram on Wednesday afternoon as part of the ongoing July Padyatra, referring to the recent Patiya incident in Chittagong.
Highlighting the police action on demonstrators in Patiya, Chittagong, Nahid Islam strongly condemned the attack, calling it “highly condemnable.” He reiterated the party’s demand for police reform and emphasized that law enforcement should not resort to violence, especially against students.
He added, “Those who are plotting against the people’s movement will face more movements.” He also announced that a manifesto for rebuilding Bangladesh will be revealed at the Central Shaheed Minar on August 3. He warned that any conspiracies would be strongly resisted.
Touching on regional inequality, the NCP convener pointed out the long-standing deprivation of border districts like Kurigram. “Kurigram is economically deprived and neglected. There are no employment opportunities. Therefore, necessary steps must be taken for the development of Kurigram by eliminating regional discrimination,” he said.
During the event, NCP leaders were welcomed by a large number of people, including students, as they reached Rajarhat. Later, Nahid Islam marched from Trimohani to Shapla Chattar in Kurigram city with thousands of party leaders and activists, where he addressed another street meeting.
The day’s program also included visits to Nageshwari and Phulbari upazilas before concluding in Lalmonirhat with the participation of central NCP leaders.
Prominent NCP figures who spoke at the rally included NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Joint Member Secretary Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, Abdul Hannan Masud, Dr. Tasnim Zara, Dr. Atiq Mozahid, and Kurigram District Convener Mukul Mia. Dr. Atiq Mojahid also declared his intention to contest from the Kurigram-2 constituency to serve and develop the area.
