In the 13th National Parliament election, Abdul Hannan Masud of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) secured a landslide victory in the Noakhali-6 (Hatiya) constituency, becoming the country’s youngest Member of Parliament.
In a rare electoral contest, his father, Amirul Islam Mohammad Abdul Malek, also contested the same seat from a different party. However, he failed to secure the required votes and forfeited his deposit.
According to Election Commission regulations, a candidate must obtain at least one-eighth of the total valid votes cast in the constituency to retain the deposit. Failing to meet this threshold, Amirul Islam Mohammad Abdul Malek’s deposit was confiscated.
Official results show that Abdul Hannan Masud, contesting with the Shapla (water lily) symbol, received 91,899 votes. His closest rival, BNP candidate Mahbuber Rahman Shamim, secured 64,021 votes. Meanwhile, his father managed only 505 votes.
The Noakhali-6 (Hatiya) constituency has 339,184 registered voters. A total of 174,332 votes were cast, including 5,367 rejected ballots, resulting in a 51.40 percent voter turnout.
In the referendum held alongside the parliamentary election, 100,925 votes were cast in favour (“Yes”), while 53,248 votes were cast against (“No”).
