Two polling agents of Jamaat-e-Islami in Dhaka-16 have been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for illegal entry and attempting to influence voters at the Mirpur Shahid Smriti High School polling centre.
The sentence was handed down on Wednesday (February 11) by a mobile court presided over by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sara Farzana Haque. Kafrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sajjad Hossain confirmed the matter.
The convicted individuals are Mehedi Hasan Khadem (32) and Raihan Hossain (23). During the incident, authorities seized two smartphones from their possession.
According to court sources, the two men entered the polling centre illegally with the assistance of the centre’s polling officer, Ms. Sumona Islam (assistant teacher), and attempted to influence voters. Under Section 73(2)(b) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, each was also fined Tk 5,000, with an additional 15 days’ imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sumona Islam has been immediately suspended for dereliction of duty.
