BNP Supporters Accused in Munshiganj Killing; No Case Filed Yet

30-year-old Jashim Uddin

The Char area of Munshiganj Sadar Upazila has been gripped by tension following the brutal killing of Jashim Uddin (30), a supporter of an independent candidate in the 13th National Parliament Election. Despite the passage of several hours since the incident, police are yet to make any arrests, and the victim’s family has not filed a formal case as of 11:00 AM this Saturday.

Details of the Incident

According to police and local sources, the attack took place on Friday afternoon in Char Abdullah village under Adhara Union. Jashim Uddin was near his home when he was reportedly ambushed, hacked, and beaten by a mob.

Witnesses and family members alleged that supporters of the BNP-nominated candidate (Sheaf of Paddy), led by Nasir Dewan and his son Shakil Dewan—who serves as the Senior Joint Convener of the Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal—orchestrated the attack.

Jashim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries around 7:00 PM on Friday evening.

Victim Profile and Political Context

Jashim Uddin, son of Mafik Naeb, was a well-respected figure in his community, managing two madrasas (one for men and one for women) in the area. In the recently concluded 13th National Parliament Election, Jashim and his family were active supporters of Md. Mohiuddin, an independent candidate who contested with the ‘Football’ symbol for the Munshiganj-3 (Sadar-Gazaria) seat.

The violence did not spare Jashim’s family. His father, Mafik Naeb, and his brother, Mokhles Naeb, were also severely injured during the assault and are currently undergoing treatment at DMCH.

Police Response and Local Fear

Additional Superintendent of Police Firoz Kabir stated today that while a formal case has not been lodged yet, multiple police teams are conducting raids to apprehend those involved. He noted that while the incident appears to be rooted in a long-standing local dispute, the election atmosphere acted as a catalyst.

Local residents, however, describe a climate of fear. “Supporters of the ‘Football’ symbol have been living in terror since the election results were announced,” said one resident, requesting anonymity. “We knew there was tension, but no one imagined it would turn this fatal.”

Family’s Grief

At Jashim’s home in Char Abdullah, the air is thick with mourning. Habiba Begum, the wife of Jashim’s elder brother, dismissed claims of a “prior dispute.”

“We had no enmity with anyone. Our only crime was supporting a specific candidate and casting our votes for the ‘Football’ symbol,” she said through tears.

With the main suspects still at large and the condition of the victim’s father and brother remaining critical, the local administration faces mounting pressure to restore order in the volatile Char area.
