A direct train service between Dhaka and Pabna is expected to begin operations in August, according to Road, Rail and Water Transport Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam.
The minister made the announcement while speaking to journalists after a meeting with government officials and local stakeholders at the Pabna Circuit House auditorium.
Train Service to Begin After Arrival of New Coaches
According to the minister, the locomotives required for the new route are already available, while additional passenger coaches are expected to arrive in the country next month.
“The necessary locomotives for the Dhaka–Pabna route are already prepared. New coaches are expected to arrive in July. Once those coaches are received, direct train services between Dhaka and Pabna will be launched on a priority basis in August,” he said.
Two New Rail Routes Planned
The minister also revealed that the government plans to introduce train services on two new routes this August.
Under the plan, the Dhaka–Pabna direct train service will be launched first, followed by the introduction of a direct Dhaka–Khulna train service.
Focus on Transport Sector Reforms
Speaking about efforts to improve discipline in the transport sector, the minister said the government intends to work collaboratively with transport owners, workers and other stakeholders rather than creating divisions.
“No particular group will receive special preference. Public interest and the expectations of citizens will remain our highest priority. An international-standard multi-modal transportation system will soon become visible in the country,” he said.
Progress on Kazirhat Ferry Terminal Relocation
Regarding the relocation of the Kazirhat ferry terminal, Sheikh Robiul Alam said preliminary work on the project has already begun.
He noted that the feasibility study and Development Project Proposal (DPP) have been completed, adding that the government is committed to implementing the project as quickly as possible due to its significant public importance and long-standing demand from local residents.
Several lawmakers, senior administrative officials and political leaders were present at the event, including members of parliament, district administration officials and law enforcement representatives.
