In a landmark step toward modernizing the country’s correctional system, Bangladesh has launched its first-ever cashless prison management system, with Munshiganj District Jail becoming the country’s first fully cashless prison.
The development was announced by the Department of Prisons in a press release issued on Sunday.
Operating under the slogan “Secure Transactions, Transparent Accounts, Modern Services,” the new system introduces a fully digital framework for inmate management, financial transactions, and security monitoring.
RFID Technology at the Core
Prison authorities said the initiative relies heavily on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to improve both security and operational efficiency.
Under the new system, RFID technology will enable prison officials to accurately identify and track inmates’ locations within the facility. It will also facilitate digital inmate counting and strengthen overall security oversight.
No More Cash Transactions Inside Prison
The cashless system eliminates the need for physical cash transactions inside the prison.
Family members and relatives visiting inmates will be able to deposit money directly into a designated digital account linked to the prisoner. Inmates will then use RFID-enabled cards to purchase food, daily necessities, and other approved items from the prison canteen.
Officials say the initiative will enhance transparency, reduce the risks associated with cash handling, and improve accountability within prison operations.
How the Digital Transaction System Works
The new cashless process consists of six steps:

A Step Toward Modern Prison Management
According to prison authorities, the initiative is part of broader efforts to establish a technology-driven correctional system that enhances inmate security, improves service delivery, and ensures greater transparency in prison administration.
Officials believe the successful implementation of the cashless model at Munshiganj District Jail could pave the way for similar systems to be introduced in prisons across Bangladesh in the future.
