A series of clashes broke out in the Shahbag area of the capital on Thursday (April 23) between activists of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir, following tensions sparked by an alleged offensive social media post about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s daughter, Zaima Rahman.
The situation escalated after Chhatra Dal activists went to Shahbag Police Station to file a case over the controversial Facebook post. Upon receiving the news, journalists, Dhaka University students, Chhatra Shibir activists, and representatives of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) rushed to the scene.
While inside the police station, a heated argument broke out between the two groups, which soon turned into a physical altercation. During the chaos, DUCSU Cultural Affairs Secretary Musaddik was reportedly assaulted inside the station premises. Another DUCSU leader, AB Jubayer, was also trapped inside during the incident.
Tensions continued to rise throughout the day. In the evening, Chhatra Dal activists gathered in Shahbag protesting what they described as “covert campus politics” and the derogatory remarks about Zaima Rahman. At that time, Chhatra Shibir activists, led by AB Jubayer and Musaddik, arrived at the scene, leading to further chase and counter-chase incidents between the two groups.
As the situation turned increasingly volatile, DUCSU leaders Musaddik and Jubayer were forced to take shelter inside the police station for safety.
According to the latest information, the confrontation between the two groups has created heightened tension in Shahbag and surrounding areas, drawing widespread attention and discussion in political circles.
