The High Court has granted bail to Baul singer Abul Sarkar, who was arrested over allegations of religious defamation. The decision was delivered by the divisional bench of Justices Atowar Rahman and Sagir Hossain of the High Court.
The court also issued a rule asking why permanent bail should not be granted to Abul Sarkar.
Lawyer’s Statement
Abul Sarkar’s lawyer, Gazi Kamrul Islam, confirmed:
“The High Court has granted him six months’ bail, so there is no obstacle to his release.”
Earlier, Abul Sarkar’s bail had been rejected twice—first on November 23 and then on December 8.
Background of the Case
The case originated from an incident on November 4 at the Khala Pagli fair in Jabra, Ghiur Upazila, Manikganj, where Abul Sarkar allegedly made remarks considered derogatory toward religion during a Baul song performance.
A video of the remarks circulated on social media, sparking public criticism. On November 19, Abul Sarkar was arrested in Madaripur during another musical performance by a team of Manikganj DB police.
Subsequently, a complaint was filed against him by Mufti Md. Abdullah at Ghiur Police Station, leading to his arrest and imprisonment through the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Manikganj.
The High Court’s bail order now allows Abul Sarkar to remain free for six months, while further legal proceedings regarding his case continue.
