President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office due to serious health complications, according to an official statement issued on Friday.
The President submitted his resignation letter to Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), on Friday afternoon. The Speaker formally received the resignation at 5:01 p.m., the statement said.
In his resignation letter, President Shahabuddin cited multiple chronic health conditions that have made it increasingly difficult for him to carry out the responsibilities of the country’s highest constitutional office.
According to the statement signed by Presidential Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam, the President is suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney complications, and has previously undergone bypass heart surgery.
The letter also revealed that he was recently diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy, a condition that causes him to experience occasional episodes of temporary unconsciousness.
“Due to my deteriorating health and the need for long-term medical treatment, I am no longer able to properly discharge the responsibilities of the office of the President,” Shahabuddin wrote in his resignation letter.
He said he was stepping down under Article 50(3) of the Constitution of Bangladesh, which allows the President to resign by submitting a written resignation to the Speaker of Parliament.
The official statement further said that, under Article 54 of the Constitution, the Speaker of Parliament will perform the duties of the President until a new President is elected and assumes office.
