Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizens Party and Opposition Chief Whip, has alleged that the reopening of banned Awami League offices across the country took place with a “green signal” from the BNP.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday afternoon at the party’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka, Nahid said,
“The Awami League would not have dared to do this without a green signal from the BNP. Any attempt to rehabilitate the politics of the Awami League will be firmly resisted.”
He warned that if the administration fails to immediately shut down those offices, the party will take political action.
“If the authorities fail to close the offices administratively without delay, we will call for political resistance. For that, we will also hold this government accountable.”
The press conference was organized to present the party’s review of the current political situation and the new cabinet.
Nahid Islam also demanded accountability from the administration over the reopening of Awami League offices in various districts. He questioned the role of some media outlets for widely publicizing the matter and alleged that interference in media independence has begun since the formation of the new government, citing incidents involving Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha and Ekattor TV.
“We do not want any party-aligned media. But we are already seeing that tendency. We hope this stops immediately and that the media can work independently.”
During the briefing, he also called for ensuring the rule of law, ending politicization in the police force, guaranteeing women’s safety in public spaces, stopping mob culture, prosecuting those involved in shrine vandalism during the interim government, ending repression against opposition activists, conducting a neutral investigation into the rape incident in Hatiya, Noakhali, and taking swift measures to keep essential commodity prices affordable during the holy month of Ramadan.
