No ‘Auto-Pass’, Exam Cancellation Under Mob Pressure: Education Minister Milon

Bangladesh Education Minister, ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon

In a firm stance against the irregularities that have plagued the education sector, the newly appointed Education Minister, ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, has ruled out the possibility of cancelling examinations or granting “auto-passes” due to mob pressure.

Speaking at a press conference at the Education Ministry on his second day in office, Milon criticized past decisions that succumbed to chaotic demands, emphasizing a return to discipline and academic integrity.

“Many things have happened in the past which should not have happened. Cancelling exams in the face of mob, giving auto pass — these were never desirable,” Milon stated clearly.

Commitment to Academic Integrity

The Minister emphasized that the government is moving forward in line with its election manifesto, aiming to make the education system “time-appropriate.”

Addressing the upcoming Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, Milon assured that preparations are complete. “Question papers have already been prepared, and discussions have been held to ensure smooth distribution and uninterrupted conduct of the exams,” he said.

Teachers Must Focus on Classrooms

Milon also issued a directive to teachers regarding their role and political participation during working hours.

“You will teach in the classroom. You cannot leave the classroom and engage in agitation,” he asserted. He added that while the government stands by teachers, responsible behavior is expected.

Addressing concerns over demands, the Minister assured that issues would be addressed through proper channels. “Your demands will come in the way they come and we will address them… But there is no need to occupy the streets to realise demands,” he added.

Stringent Rules for All Institutions

The Minister also addressed the oversight of non-traditional educational institutions, promising a overhaul of regulations.

  • English-Medium Schools: Milon announced that these institutions will be brought strictly under government rules, with punishments for any offences committed.
  • Safety Standards: He raised concerns about unauthorized schools operating in unsafe premises, specifically mentioning schools operating out of garages. “We must ensure fire exits and security. These are our children.”
