Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several senior opposition MPs, were detained by Delhi Police on Monday morning during a protest march to the Election Commission’s office.
The rally, organised by the opposition INDIA bloc, was aimed at submitting a formal complaint against the Election Commission, alleging that it is siding with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run-up to national polls. Police said only 30 MPs had permission to visit the poll body, but over 200 joined the march.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla stated that officers intervened to prevent “any breakdown of law and order” after some protesters attempted to cross or jump police barricades.
While being escorted to a police bus, Rahul Gandhi told reporters, “This fight is not political—it is to save the Constitution. The fight is for one person, one vote. We want a clean and accurate voter list.” Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of suppressing dissent, calling it “cowardly” and “afraid of the people’s voice.”
Footage from outside Parliament showed hundreds of leaders and supporters waving placards, chanting slogans, and confronting police barriers. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was seen climbing over two barricades before being detained.
All detained leaders were taken to a nearby station, police confirmed. The INDIA bloc has vowed to intensify its campaign, calling for transparency, fairness, and accountability in the electoral process.
