PM Tarique Rahman to Make First Official Foreign Visit to Malaysia

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to make his first official foreign visit since assuming office, with Malaysia chosen as the destination instead of regional powers India or China.

According to senior government and diplomatic sources, the prime minister is expected to visit Kuala Lumpur on a two-day state visit on June 21 and 22 at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Officials at the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur confirmed that the Malaysian government formally conveyed the invitation through diplomatic channels earlier this week. Discussions are currently underway to arrange a bilateral meeting between the two leaders on June 22, the second day of the visit.

Strategic Choice Amid Regional Dynamics

Diplomatic sources say the government exercised particular caution in selecting the destination for the prime minister’s first overseas trip, considering the evolving geopolitical landscape in Asia and the growing strategic competition between India and China.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had reportedly received invitations from both Narendra Modi and Li Qiang following the parliamentary election. However, the government ultimately opted for Malaysia, a move observers interpret as an effort to maintain diplomatic balance while strengthening ties with an important regional partner.

Foreign policy analysts note that the destination of a new prime minister’s first official visit often carries symbolic significance, reflecting the government’s diplomatic priorities and strategic outlook.

Agenda Yet to Be Finalized

Although the detailed itinerary and agenda have not yet been finalized, diplomatic officials in Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur said discussions are ongoing and are expected to be completed in the coming days.

Sources familiar with the preparations indicated that migration, trade, investment, and educational cooperation are likely to feature prominently in the talks between the two sides.

Focus on Education and Economic Cooperation

Malaysia has expressed particular interest in expanding cooperation in the education sector. Diplomatic sources noted that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has repeatedly emphasized the importance of strengthening educational ties between the two countries.

Currently, around 11,000 Bangladeshi students are studying in Malaysia, making Bangladesh the second-largest source of international students in the country after China. Chinese students in Malaysia number approximately 62,000.

Beyond education, the visit is also expected to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration in labor migration, industrial investment, manufacturing, and economic development.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Observers believe the upcoming visit could provide fresh momentum to Bangladesh-Malaysia relations at a time when both countries are seeking greater economic cooperation and regional engagement.

As preparations continue, the visit is being viewed as an important diplomatic milestone for the new government and a potential platform for expanding bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
