Govt Approves 25% Metro Rail Fare Discount for Elderly and Disabled Passengers

The government has approved a 25% fare discount on single-journey metro rail tickets for citizens aged 65 years and above, as well as persons with disabilities and special needs.

The decision was finalized after the proposal from the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry received approval from the Finance Division. An official notification is expected to be issued soon.

Eligibility Criteria

According to the approved proposal:

  • Senior citizens (65+) will receive the discount upon verification using their National Identity Card (NID)
  • Persons with disabilities and special needs will be eligible upon presenting the government-issued “Sujonno Identity Card” under the Ministry of Social Welfare

Policy Background

Officials said the decision aligns with the government’s election manifesto and the Road Transport and Highways Division’s 180-day action plan.

Previously, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) provided:

  • Free travel for war-wounded freedom fighters
  • 15% discount for persons with disabilities

Under the new policy, the discount for disabled passengers has been increased to 25%, and senior citizens are included for the first time.

Financial Impact

DMTCL estimates that the new concession may reduce annual ticket revenue by approximately Tk 12 crore, which is about 3% of total fare revenue.

Officials said the decision was reviewed in consultation with the Finance Division due to its financial implications.

Students’ Fare Discount Not Yet Decided

Authorities also clarified that no decision has yet been made regarding fare discounts for students. However, it may be considered in the future based on revenue and operational considerations of DMTCL.
