A court in Cox’s Bazar has sentenced four people to death and nine others to life imprisonment in the murder case of Bangladesh Army Lieutenant Md. Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon.
In a separate arms case linked to the same incident, 13 accused were sentenced to 17 years in prison, while five individuals were acquitted in both cases due to lack of evidence.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday (May 20) by Judge Mohammad Abul Monsur Siddiqui of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-5 in Cox’s Bazar.
The information was confirmed by state prosecutor Additional Public Prosecutor Khorshed Alam Chowdhury and the plaintiff’s lead lawyer Mohammad Jahangir.
Court Proceedings
Lawyers from both sides said 12 accused were present in court during the verdict announcement, while one convict remains absconding.
The court had fixed Tuesday for the verdict, and the accused were brought from Cox’s Bazar District Jail in the morning. Following the hearing, the judge announced the sentences in the robbery and murder case.
Convicted Individuals
The four individuals sentenced to death are:
- Md. Helal Uddin
- Nurul Amin
- Md. Nasir Uddin
- Morshed Alam
The nine convicted with life imprisonment include:
- Jamal Uddin Babul
- Mohammad Arif Ullah
- Mohammad Anwar Hakim
- Ziabul Karim
- Md. Ismail Hossain
- Enamul Haque (ToTa Enam)
- Mohammad Enam
- Md. Kamal
- Abdul Karim
Five others were acquitted after the charges could not be proven.
Background of the Case
According to court documents, the incident took place on September 24, 2024, during a joint force operation in the Maizpara area of Dulahazara Union under Chakaria Upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
The operation was conducted to prevent robbery and recover illegal weapons.
During the raid, members of an alleged robbery gang attempted to flee. Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon (23) chased them and was later seriously injured in a stabbing attack.
He was taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Ramu, where he later died while undergoing treatment.
Investigation and Charges
Two separate cases were filed the following day:
- A robbery and murder case filed by Senior Warrant Officer Abdullah Al Harunur Rashid of the Army’s Fashiyakhali Camp
- An arms case filed by police Sub-Inspector Alamgir Hossain
Initially, 17 named and 25 unidentified individuals were accused.
After the investigation, the police submitted charge sheets against 18 individuals on January 19, 2025. Investigators excluded six originally named suspects after finding no involvement and added seven new names uncovered during the investigation.
