A 10-year-old student, Md. Abdullah was found hanging in the bathroom of a madrasa in Dhaka’s Banashree area, while another student, Shihab Hossain, has been detained in connection with the incident.
Police said Shihab was arrested on Wednesday (May 20) around 6 PM from Bera upazila in Pabna district.
Arrest Operation
Bera Model Police Sub-Inspector Montaz Ali confirmed the arrest, stating that a team led by Rampura Police Station SI Ekramul Haque conducted an operation in Bera.
According to police, the accused student had fled the madrasa and was staying in Tangail. He was later traced and brought to Bera through communication with his father. He was arrested at the Bera C&B bus stand area upon arrival and later taken to Dhaka by the Rampura police. Local police assisted in the operation.
Case and Investigation
Investigation officer and Rampura Police Sub-Inspector Ekramul Haque said the madrasa authorities filed a case on Wednesday, naming the student as an accused, following which he was arrested.
He also said preliminary allegations suggest that the accused may have been involved in abuse of other students at the madrasa.
Police suspect that Abdullah may have been subjected to sexual abuse, and that humiliation and psychological trauma could have led to his death by suicide. However, the matter is under active investigation.
Incident Background
Earlier on Tuesday (May 19) around 11:30 PM, police recovered the hanging body of Md. Abdullah (10) from a bathroom on the third floor of Alokito Quran International Hifz Madrasa located on Road No. 3 in Block C of Banashree, Dhaka.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
