Rakibul Islam Rakib Signals End of Tenure as Chhatra Dal Central President

Md Rakibul Islam Rakib, president of the central committee of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), has signaled the conclusion of his tenure as the top leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) student wing.

In a emotional post published on his official Facebook profile, the student leader expressed deep gratitude to the party high command, central and regional unit leaders, and general students, signaling a transition toward a “new phase” in his personal and political life.

Reflections and Gratitude

In his status, Md Rakibul Islam Rakib expressed immense gratitude to BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as well as late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, for entrusting him with the leadership of JCD. He also conveyed his sincere appreciation to outgoing BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Student Affairs Secretary Rokibul Islam Bakul, and senior party leaders for their guidance.

Highlighting the contributions of organizational units across major public universities, medical colleges, and urban units, Rakib acknowledged their role in driving street programs through financial constraints and political challenges.

“I am immensely proud of the leadership across all units of Chhatra Dal till my last breath, as none of my leaders were involved in any embarrassing headlines,” Rakib wrote. “Despite severe financial distress, they led their respective units with utmost honesty and dedication.”

Navigating Post-Revolution Realities

Reflecting on his tenure, Rakib pointed out that the defining milestone of the committee led by himself and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir was coordinating with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement during the July Mass Uprising and playing a decisive role on the streets.

He also addressed the complex realities that followed the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5, 2024. He noted that his committee had to navigate numerous instances of mob activity across educational institutions and persistent social media campaigns while maintaining organizational discipline.

Rakib emphasized his personal commitment to promoting positive student politics, ensuring that general students on university campuses were not subjected to harassment by party activists.

A New Chapter

Concluding his message, Md Rakibul Islam Rakib urged the activist base and general public to warmly welcome the incoming leadership of Chhatra Dal.

“I want to start a new life. I want to mold myself into a more refined, humane, and honest human being. No one is above mistakes… If I have hurt anyone during my tenure, I request forgiveness with grace,” he stated.

Background: The Rakib-Nasir Committee

Md Rakibul Islam Rakib was appointed president of the central parliament of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on March 1, 2024, alongside General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir. Prior to assuming the presidency, he served as the senior joint general secretary of the previous central committee. On June 15, 2024, BNP officially approved a comprehensive 260-member central committee under his leadership.

Throughout his term, Rakib led Chhatra Dal through critical political transitions, including the final phase of the anti-fascist movement, the August 2024 political changeover, and the subsequent restructuring of campus politics across the country.
