Bangladeshi-origin Canadian citizen Dolly Begum has been elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Canada’s federal by-election with a decisive victory.
Running as a candidate of the Liberal Party of Canada, she secured the Scarborough Southwest seat in Toronto, Ontario, marking a significant political milestone.
The by-elections, held on Monday local time, were conducted in three key ridings, and the outcome has solidified the Liberal Party’s majority in Parliament, bringing their total seats to 174.
The results are considered highly significant for Prime Minister Mark Carney, as the majority will make it easier for his government to pass legislation and implement policies effectively.
Before entering federal politics, Dolly Begum had been elected three times as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in Ontario, representing the New Democratic Party (NDP) in 2018, 2022, and again last year.
Explaining her decision to move to federal politics, she said:
“I have fought for the people of Scarborough Southwest for the past seven years. But at this critical moment, I felt it was necessary to work at the federal level to help build a stronger and more independent economic structure.”
She added:
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, I want to achieve that goal. I am ready to take on the challenges of reducing the cost of living, ensuring affordable housing, and building a united and prosperous Canada.”
Dolly Begum was born in Bangladesh’s Moulvibazar district and moved to Canada at the age of 12 with her family. She completed her undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto and earned a master’s degree in Development Administration and Planning from University College London (UCL).
Community leader Delowar Elahi said:
“Dolly Begum has built a unique position in a multicultural society through her integrity, efficiency, and strong public connection.”
He added that her success would inspire Bangladeshis, especially the younger generation, to participate in mainstream politics.
Congratulating her, Prime Minister Mark Carney said:
“Dolly Begum’s victory reflects her years of hard work, leadership, and commitment to the people.”
He further noted:
“Her voice, experience, and leadership will play an important role in building a stronger and more just Canada.”
