French President Emmanuel Macron has said that if U.S. President Donald Trump truly wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize, he must take decisive action to stop the ongoing war in Gaza.
In an interview with France’s BFM TV on Tuesday, Macron stressed that Trump alone holds the leverage to pressure Israel into ending the conflict.
“Only one man has the power to do something about this. He is the President of the United States,” Macron said.
The French President explained that Washington bears unique responsibility because of its direct military support for Israel.
“We do not supply the weapons or equipment that fuel the war in Gaza. But the United States does. That is why Trump can do more than us,” Macron noted.
At the UN General Assembly earlier in the day, Trump delivered a fiery speech, rejecting European proposals to recognize a Palestinian state, calling such recognition a “reward for Hamas.” At the same time, he declared:
“We must immediately stop the war in Gaza. We must immediately begin peace talks.”
Commenting on Trump’s address, Macron said he saw an American president actively engaged on the issue, but warned that words alone will not bring peace.
“He wants the Nobel Peace Prize. But the Nobel Prize is only possible if he ends this conflict,” Macron added.
This year, several countries — including Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan — have nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump himself told the UN that he deserves the award, as four of his predecessors received it.
Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly defended Trump’s record, insisting that no other leader at the UN has done more for peace.
“Only this President has achieved so much for global stability, because he has made America strong again,” she said.
