A two-and-a-half-year-old child, Nuzaifa Akter, was allegedly killed by her aunt, Kalpana Akter (15), in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia following a long-standing family dispute, police said.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon (March 18) in South Darer Para village. The victim, Nuzaifa, was the daughter of Abdur Rahman, a resident of the same village.
According to police and local sources, the accused Kalpana Akter reportedly confessed during primary interrogation. She allegedly took the child to a nearby mahogany garden amid an ongoing dispute with the child’s mother, Priya Khatun. There, she is accused of strangling the child with a scarf, causing death by suffocation.
Police said the accused later attempted to stage the incident as a suicide by hanging the body from a tree in the garden before fleeing the scene.
Police Statement
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arifur Rahman of Daulatpur Police Station said:
“The body of the child was recovered in a hanging অবস্থায় from a mahogany tree in a garden owned by a local resident named Touhid in South Darer Para village.”
“Based on the complaint by the victim’s mother, Priya Khatun, we questioned the child’s younger aunt, Kalpana Akter. During interrogation, she confessed that she strangled the child and later hung the body in the garden.”
He further added that the body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy, and the accused has been taken into police custody.
Police also confirmed that legal proceedings are underway to file a case in connection with the incident.
