Substandard School Feeding Sparks Concern; Govt Orders Strict Action

The government’s School Feeding Program, introduced to encourage primary school students to attend classes regularly and ensure they receive nutritious food, has recently come under scrutiny following reports of serious irregularities.

According to recent media coverage, several students fell ill after consuming low-quality and allegedly rotten food provided under the mid-day meal scheme in Chapainawabganj Sadar and Madaripur Sadar upazilas. The incidents have raised concerns among parents and education authorities regarding food safety and monitoring in the program.

In response, the government has taken immediate and firm action, vowing to hold those responsible accountable. A press release issued yesterday by the Ministry of Education confirmed that strict measures will be taken against the culprits without delay.

In Madaripur, the Deputy Commissioner has already formed a five-member investigation committee to probe the matter. Additionally, the project director has issued a show-cause notice to food suppliers, questioning why their contracts should not be cancelled.

Meanwhile, Education and Primary & Mass Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Chapainawabganj to form a committee that includes the Civil Surgeon to ensure a thorough investigation. The District Primary Education Officer of Chapainawabganj has already submitted an initial report, and authorities have confirmed that a show-cause notice will also be issued to the food supplier there.

The ministry further stated:

Appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible under the Safe Food Act.

Officials from both districts have been directed to proceed with legal measures, ensuring accountability and preventing such incidents in the future.

The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining food quality, student safety, and the integrity of the School Feeding Program, emphasizing that negligence in such a critical initiative will not be tolerated.
