A road accident in Patiya caused by thick smoke from burning straw has left one person dead and eight others injured, police and local sources reported. The incident occurred around 9:30 am on Wednesday on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Arkan Road, at Jalurdighi Para in Patiya Upazila.
The deceased was identified as Banshi Mohan Das (50), a resident of Lohagara Upazila. Following the crash, a team from Patiya Fire Service arrived at the scene to rescue the victims. The accident also caused long traffic jams on the road.
The injured were taken to Patiya Upazila Health Complex. Their names and ages are: Mohammad (50), Zainal (30), Mintu Das (19), Anwar (38), Nurul Alam (29), Taher (46), Tipu Chowdhury (36), and Shirin Akter (47). Six of them were later transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
According to police, the accident was triggered by dense smoke from burning straw along the roadside, which caused near-total darkness on the road. This led to a head-on collision between two Eagle Paribahan buses, while at the same time, a Marsa Paribahan bus lost control and crashed into a roadside pillar, sustaining severe damage.
Harunur Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of Patiya Crossing Highway Police, confirmed the incident:
“One person has died and several others were injured. Three damaged vehicles have been recovered and traffic has been restored.”
The authorities are investigating the accident to determine further details and ensure road safety.
