Handcuffed Brothers Temporarily Released to Attend Mother’s Funeral in Ramu

Two brothers, Faridul Alam and Mohammad Ismail, residents of Panershara village in South Mithachhari Union, Ramu, Cox’s Bazar, were temporarily released from prison on Saturday (February 21) to attend their mother’s funeral. Their mother, Mostofa Begum (80), passed away due to old age.

The brothers were granted parole from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. following a request from close relatives. After Zuhur prayers, they joined the funeral at the field adjacent to Panershara Central Jame Mosque, under police supervision, still handcuffed.

Speaking through tears at the funeral, elder brother Faridul Alam said:

“We have been victims of conspiracy due to our involvement in banned Awami League politics. We have harmed no one in the area. Pray for our late mother and our ailing father, Nur Ahmed. Insha’Allah, we will return safely with your prayers.”

Relatives and locals stated that the two brothers are union-level leaders of the banned Awami League. Although they were granted bail in one case, they were rearrested and have been in prison for the last two and a half months.

Ramu Police Station OC Monirul Islam Bhuiya said that the brothers were released for a specified period upon request from relatives and were sent back to the district jail after the funeral. He added that multiple cases are pending against the two in Ramu Police Station.
