Clashes break out between supporters of Rumeen Farhana and Junaid at polling station

A scuffle broke out between supporters of independent candidate Barrister Rumin Farhana and BNP alliance candidate Junaid Al Habib in Sarail under the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency on Thursday (February 12).

The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. in front of the Alinagar Government Primary School polling centre in Sarail upazila. The clash caused panic among voters, forcing authorities to suspend voting for about 10 minutes.

However, members of law enforcement agencies quickly brought the situation under control, preventing it from escalating further.

Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monjur Kader Bhuiyan said supporters of the two candidates were involved in a brief altercation outside the polling centre. For security reasons, the presiding officer temporarily suspended voting for 10 minutes. Polling later resumed normally, and no casualties were reported.

Earlier in the day, Barrister Rumin Farhana alleged attempts to forcibly stamp ballots in favour of the “Date Palm Tree” symbol at eight polling centres in Ashuganj Upazila of the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency (which includes Sarail, Ashuganj, and parts of Bijoynagar).

After casting her vote, she said she had informed the police, army, and district commissioner about the eight centres. She also alleged that her supporters were facing administrative harassment and claimed that two of her activists were detained by police the previous night without specific charges.

According to her, there had been plans to stamp ballots in favour of the “Date Palm Tree” symbol during the night, and her supporters were guarding the centres to prevent such activities.
