Tarique Rahman Pledges Padma Barrage Construction and Economic Reforms at Rajshahi Rally

BNP chairman Tarique Rahman,

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has announced a series of ambitious development plans for the northern region, including the construction of the Padma Barrage, should his party be voted to power.

Addressing a massive election rally as the chief guest at the historic Madrasa Maidan on Thursday (January 29) afternoon, Tarique Rahman emphasized the need for water management and employment generation in the Barind tract.

Revitalizing Water Resources and Agriculture

Pointing to the current state of the Padma River, the BNP Chairman noted the lack of water and the subsequent impact on the local economy.

“There is no water in the Padma. Despite the large population, there is a lack of employment. We want to relaunch the Barind project, excavate canals and water bodies, and dredge the Padma River. We want to take up the construction of the Padma Barrage,” Tarique Rahman declared.

To support the region’s agricultural backbone, he proposed:

  • Cold Storage for Mangoes: To preserve the region’s famous produce.
  • Agro-based Industrialization: Establishing mills and factories with special assistance.
  • Agricultural Support: Introducing “Agriculture Cards” for farmers and waiving interest on agricultural loans up to 10,000 BDT.

Social Welfare and Youth Empowerment

Tarique Rahman highlighted that education alone is not enough; the youth must be made self-reliant. He pledged to:

  • Activate IT Parks and establish Vocational Institutes.
  • Introduce “Family Cards” for every household to ensure social security.
  • Build a Specialized Hospital in Rajshahi to improve regional healthcare.

A Call for Peace and Fair Investigation

In a departure from traditional political rhetoric, the BNP Chairman avoided direct criticism of opponents, stating that “criticism does not fill stomachs” or “create jobs.” He urged the interim government to maintain law and order.

“If any untoward incident occurs anywhere, I urge the interim government to conduct a fair and proper investigation. Even if there is any role of BNP, we will cooperate. But the trial must follow the law of the land based on a correct investigation,” he said.

Warning Against Election Conspiracies

Reflecting on the voting rights of the people, Tarique Rahman warned that certain quarters are still conspiring to disrupt the upcoming polls. He urged the thousands in attendance to remain vigilant.

“The people could not vote in the past. Now, another circle is plotting from within to damage the election. If the people remain alert on the 12th, then the 13th will be the Day of the People,” he added.

Arrival in Rajshahi

This visit marks Tarique Rahman’s first trip to Rajshahi in two decades for election campaigning. Upon arriving at Shah Makhdum Airport after noon, he proceeded to the shrine of Hazarat Shah Makhdum (RH) to offer prayers before joining the rally at the Madrasa Maidan.
