BAGCHAS Renamed ‘Jatiya Chatra Shakti’ in Major Organisational Shift

Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, BAGCHAS

The Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BAGCHAS), a prominent student body that emerged from the recent July Uprising, has officially changed its name to ‘Jatiya Chatra Shakti’ (National Student Force). The announcement was made today during a national coordination meeting, signaling a fundamental restructuring and formalising its role as the student wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP).

The Restructuring Event

The major reform and future political strategy meeting of the student body was held at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Hall in Shahbagh, Dhaka. The event brought together central leaders of the organisation and key figures from the National Citizen Party (NCP).

The decision to change the name and shift its operational status from an independent student body to an associate organisation of the NCP was finalised at the assembly. The new name, ‘Jatiya Chhatra Shakti,’ was revealed to a supportive reception from the attendees.

Formal Affiliation with NCP

The most significant takeaway from the announcement is the formal end of the organisation’s previous stance of non-partisan independence. Leaders confirmed that ‘Jatiya Chatra Shakti’ will now function as the dedicated student front of the National Citizen Party (NCP).

Speaking at the event, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain underscored the new organisation’s role in upholding the spirit of the student-led movement. He called on the student body to remain vigilant against a “culture of fear” on campuses, saying: “The student parliament must be vocal to ensure that no one can create ‘Gono-room’ or ‘Guest-room’ culture again.”

The NCP leadership also addressed the ongoing political dialogue, stating that the party would not compromise on the implementation of the July Charter.

Reason for the Organisational Shift

BAGCHAS, which launched on February 26, 2025, with the slogan ‘Education, Unity, Liberation’, was formed by coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement. However, within eight months of its inception, the organisation faced setbacks, most notably failing to secure expected results in recent student council elections, including at Dhaka University (DUCSU).

This underperformance, coupled with internal debate over its independent versus politically-aligned structure, prompted calls for reorganisation. According to sources within the organisation, the move to rename and formally align with the NCP, a party with similar ideological underpinnings, is a strategic step to:

  1. Strengthen Organisational Discipline: Address alleged “infiltration” and “sabotage” by individuals with conflicting political ideals, which had reportedly caused disciplinary issues.
  2. Ensure a Clearer Political Path: Provide a definitive platform and direction for its student activism, transitioning from general welfare politics to a focus on achieving better results in future student union elections under a shared ideological banner.

Abu Baker Majumder, who served as the Convener of BAGCHAS, and Zahid Ahsan, the Member Secretary, are expected to remain in the central leadership of the newly formed ‘Jatiya Chhatra Shakti’. While a full new committee was not announced at the event, it is anticipated to be revealed soon.

The student organisation now embarks on its activities with a new name and a clear political mandate, aiming to restructure its grassroots presence across the country.
