A reckless speeding bus ran over and killed Md. Mostafiz Hasan (52), Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naogaon District Detective Branch (DB), as he was helping his wife cross the road in Gazipur city on Friday night.
The tragic accident took place around 10 p.m. in front of the Gazipur Police Lines on the Joydebpur–Shibbari road. Witnesses said OC Mostafiz was holding his wife’s hand to ensure her safety while crossing, when a bus of Pother Shathi Paribahan hit them at high speed.
Mostafiz was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. His wife, Latifa Jesmin, sustained critical injuries and was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Md. Zahidul Hasan confirmed the incident, saying that Mostafiz had parked his private car across the road earlier in the evening and was returning with his wife when the tragedy struck.
Locals and police immediately apprehended both the bus and its driver, identified as Md. Sumon, and handed him over to the police.
Police officials expressed shock over the sudden death of OC Mostafiz, who had been serving the Detective Branch with distinction.
