Problem Lies in Myanmar, Solution Too: Dr. Yunus on Rohingya Crisis

Dr. Yunus on Rohingya Crisis

Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has said that the Rohingya crisis originated in Myanmar, and its solution must also come from there. He made the remark on Monday while addressing the dialogue titled “Stakeholders’ Dialogue: Takeaway to the High-Level Conference on the Rohingya Situation” held in Cox’s Bazar.

Calling upon the international community for sustainable measures, Dr. Yunus stressed that Bangladesh cannot indefinitely bear the burden of sheltering 1.3 million Rohingya refugees. He urged global actors to intervene and stop the Myanmar junta and Arakan Army from carrying out persecution against the Rohingya.

“It is our moral responsibility to halt the armed killers from executing their horrific plan of ethnic cleansing,” said Dr. Yunus. “Today, we hope to find a way forward for the Rohingyas to return to their own homes with dignity.”

To mark the eighth year since the forced displacement of Rohingyas to Bangladesh, the dialogue outlined a seven-point action plan for resolving the crisis. The government has announced that the proposals and recommendations made during this consultation will be presented at the upcoming United Nations high-level conference on the Rohingya situation, scheduled for September 30 in New York.

The UN meeting is expected to draw participation from representatives of around 170 countries, where the plight of the Rohingya and other persecuted communities of Myanmar will be discussed in depth.
