A case has been filed over an alleged attack and theft at Hazrat Shah Ali (R.) Mazar in Dhaka, naming nine individuals and accusing an additional 100–150 unidentified Jamaat activists.
The case was filed on Saturday (16 May) evening at Shah Ali Police Station by Resmi Begum (40), a devotee and regular visitor of the mazar. Police have confirmed the filing.
Deputy Commissioner of the Mirpur Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Md. Mostak Sarkar said three people have already been arrested in connection with the incident.
Named Accused
The named accused include the following:
Mo. Ali Akbar (48), Mo. Bappa (35), Mo. Babu (45), Mo. Kausar (26), Azam (40), Sheikh Md. Russell (38), Kazi Zahir (52), Md. Mizan (38) and Kazi Panir (50).
All of them are reportedly residents of the Shah Ali Police Station area.
Arrests and Investigation
Among the arrested individuals are Sheikh Md. Russell and Azam, both of whom are listed as named accused in the case. Another individual, Arman Dewan, was also arrested as an unidentified suspect.
Police said the investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend other suspects.
Allegations in the Case
According to the complaint, the incident took place in the early hours of 14 May when a group of people allegedly entered the mazar area carrying sticks and attacked devotees during religious rituals.
The attackers allegedly beat visitors, injured several people, and damaged religious symbols, including tearing red cloth tied around trees and breaking candle stands, which the complainant described as an attack on religious sentiments.
The complainant further alleged that when she tried to resist, she was assaulted and harassed.
It is also stated in the case that around Tk 90,000 was stolen from devotees during the incident.
Authorities say further legal action will follow based on the investigation.
