Shakib Al Hasan, 14 Others Sued by ACC Over Tk256cr Stock Market Scam

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former Bangladesh cricket captain and ex-MP Shakib Al Hasan and 14 others, accusing them of embezzling Tk256 crore through stock market manipulation.

ACC Director General Md Akhter Hossain confirmed the filing of the case today. The case, lodged by ACC Assistant Director Sazzad Hossain, comes a day after a travel ban was imposed on all 15 accused by a court on 16 June.

Among the other accused are Md Abul Khayer alias Hiru, deputy registrar of the Department of Cooperatives, and his wife Kazi Sadia Hasan. The case also names several others alleged to have colluded in a wide-reaching conspiracy involving illegal trading, rumour-spreading, and abuse of regulatory loopholes.

According to the ACC, Shakib Al Hasan invested in shares of Paramount Insurance, Crystal Insurance, and Sonali Papers—companies whose stocks were being manipulated by co-accused Abul Khayer. Shakib allegedly gained Tk2.95 crore through this investment and is accused of being complicit in misleading general investors.

The case also highlights that Khayer and his wife moved over Tk21 crore of illicit funds across multiple channels to hide their origins. In total, Khayer reportedly conducted suspicious transactions worth over Tk542 crore through 17 bank accounts.

All 15 accused have been charged under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. The ACC previously initiated a separate inquiry into Shakib’s wealth and alleged money laundering in April.
