In a move aimed at deepening the growing cultural relationship between India and Israel, Israeli officials have announced plans to install a large statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in an Israeli city.
The announcement was made by Yaniv Revach on the occasion of Shiv Rajyabhishek Day. The initiative is expected to further strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries and highlight the historical legacy of the Maratha ruler among Israelis.
Symbol of Long-Term Friendship
Speaking to ANI, Consul General Yaniv Revach said Israel recognizes the profound impact and significance of Shivaji Maharaj in Indian history.
“We understand how deeply Shivaji Maharaj is respected in India. That is why we are planning to create a large statue and bring it to Israel,”
Revach said.
He added:
“This is not merely a project; it is a symbol of a long-term relationship that will bring the people of our two countries closer together.”
Request for Maharashtra’s Support
To ensure historical and artistic accuracy, Israeli authorities have sought assistance from Devendra Fadnavis, requesting historical references, design guidance, and artistic input for the monument.
According to reports, Fadnavis welcomed the proposal and expressed his government’s willingness to provide full support for the project.
In a letter addressed to the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Israeli officials stated that the statue would serve as a powerful symbol of the close relationship between India and Israel.
Recognizing Historical Connections
The proposal also highlights the longstanding historical ties between Maharashtra and the Indian Jewish community, many of whose descendants now live in Israel and contribute significantly to Israeli society.
Revach said the project would help introduce Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy, leadership, and military achievements to a wider Israeli audience.
“During my visits to India, I have witnessed the deep respect Indians have for Israel and its national heroes. We also want Israelis to learn more about Shivaji Maharaj and his remarkable history,”
he said.
Positive Response from Maharashtra
Following the announcement, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the initiative in a post on X, describing it as a “historic and significant development.”
He thanked the Israeli Consul General for the proposal and reiterated Maharashtra’s commitment to extending full cooperation for the project.
The planned statue is being viewed as another milestone in the expanding cultural partnership between India and Israel, reflecting growing engagement beyond diplomatic and economic relations.
