Indian High Commission Pays Tribute to Ziaur Rahman on 45th Martyrdom Anniversary

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has paid tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, marking his 45th martyrdom anniversary.

The tribute was conveyed in a statement published on the High Commission’s verified Facebook page on Saturday (May 30).

In the statement, the Indian mission recalled Ziaur Rahman’s historic role during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.

“As the people of Bangladesh gather today to remember one of the nation’s greatest sons, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, we recall his famous radio broadcast in March 1971 that inspired people, encouraged resistance against oppression, and guided the nation toward liberation,” the statement said.

The High Commission highlighted the significance of Ziaur Rahman’s contribution to Bangladesh’s struggle for independence and noted the enduring historical bonds between the two neighbouring countries.

The statement further said that, just as in 1971, India continues to stand alongside the people of Bangladesh, united by a shared legacy of sacrifice and a common journey toward progress and prosperity.

“Today, as then, India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh, bound by a glorious history of shared sacrifices and a common pursuit of progress and prosperity for the people of both countries,” it added.

Ziaur Rahman, a sector commander during the Liberation War and later the President of Bangladesh, was assassinated on May 30, 1981. His death anniversary is observed annually by his party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and supporters across the country through various commemorative programs.
