The government has initiated a gradual transformation of the country’s prisons into production-oriented institutions by installing solar energy systems, according to the prison authorities.
Under the plan, solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of all prison buildings to generate electricity for internal use. At the same time, surplus power will be supplied to the national grid.
In a statement issued on Friday (May 8), the Prisons Directorate said a contract was signed on May 5 between the Prisons Directorate and Ingen Technologies Limited to implement the project.
The agreement will allow electricity generated from solar panels to be fed into the national transmission line under a net metering system, while also meeting the prisons’ own energy demands.
Officials said:
“Excess electricity generated will be supplied to the national grid, which will help reduce government expenditure in the power sector.”
According to the authorities, the project will be implemented without any financial investment from the government or prison authorities, as it will be fully funded through private investment.
Officials further added that such initiatives are part of a broader plan to gradually transform the country’s prisons into more productive and self-sustaining institutions through diversified activities.
