PM Tarique Rahman: Govt Inherited Tk 30 Trillion Debt Amid Economic Crisis and Institutional Collapse

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the current democratic government began its work carrying a massive Tk 30 trillion debt burden, which he blamed on corruption and mismanagement during the previous “fascist regime.”

He made the remarks while inaugurating the Deputy Commissioner Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Sunday (May 3), where he presented an overview of the country’s current economic and administrative situation.

Severe Economic and Institutional Crisis

The Prime Minister said the government inherited:

  • The weakest economy in the country’s history
  • A weak and divided public administration
  • A deteriorating law and order situation

He added that key institutions had been weakened, stating:

“The judiciary, Election Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission and other constitutional bodies were rendered ineffective.”

He also noted that the education and health sectors were in poor condition, while the country had been turned into an import-dependent economy, with rising poverty and unemployment and limited job creation.

War Situation and Governance Challenges

Referring to global instability, he said:

“No country has been spared from the impact of war situations.”

He added that the government is working to manage challenges without increasing public hardship.

Welfare State Vision and Social Programs

The Prime Minister said the government is committed to building a just welfare state based on religious and social values.

He highlighted ongoing initiatives including:

  • Farmer Card program
  • Family Card program
  • Sports Card distribution
  • Monthly allowances for Imams, Muezzins, and religious leaders of all faiths

He emphasized that the government’s goal is to bring all citizens under a social safety net regardless of political affiliation.
