The government has announced that starting from the next academic year, sports will be included as a compulsory subject from the fourth grade. Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque announced in parliament today.
Responding to a question from Chattogram-16 MP Mohammad Zahirul Islam, the minister said that sports will now hold the same status as core subjects like Bangla and English. Initially, seven sports disciplines will be introduced, with more added gradually over time. Students’ performance will be evaluated both theoretically and practically, but active participation on the field will remain the primary criterion.
“The initiative aims to bring children back to outdoor activities, as many have become increasingly dependent on digital devices at home,” Aminul Haque said. He added that engaging youth in sports could help build a drug-free society.
On infrastructure, the minister mentioned that the government will develop sports fields in 495 upazilas nationwide. The Prime Minister has already instructed relevant authorities to implement this initiative.
This move is part of the government’s effort to encourage a more active lifestyle among students and promote overall youth development.
