PM Tarique Rahman Says ‘Awami League’s Ghost’ Has Possessed Another Party

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday said that the “ghost of the Awami League,” ousted through a student–people uprising, has now taken hold of another political party.

He made the remarks while addressing a public gathering after inaugurating the re-excavation of the Ulshi canal in Sharsha, Jashore.

The Prime Minister alleged that the party now influenced by the Awami League “does not seek the welfare of the people” and warned that everyone must remain vigilant to prevent any attempt to create instability in the country.

He said the government remains committed to implementing the July Charter, stating,
“We will implement the July Charter we have signed.”

He also accused certain political groups of creating confusion over the referendum verdict and attempting to divert both the verdict and the charter for their own purposes, which, he claimed, could lead to unrest.

Rahman further warned that any chaotic situation would disrupt ongoing development initiatives, including the distribution of family cards and other welfare programmes.

Highlighting future plans, the Prime Minister announced that the government aims to ensure free education for women up to the degree level. He also said that, alongside family cards, LPG cards will be provided to women to support household needs.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, he said the government is determined to implement all electoral promises, including nationwide canal excavation projects.

The Ulshi canal, located in Jadunathpur, was originally excavated on November 1, 1976, by then President Ziaur Rahman to benefit residents of 26 villages in Sharsha. It later became known as the Zia Canal. The Prime Minister inaugurated its re-excavation as part of the government’s ongoing development efforts.
