7 arrested, including main accused Moin in CKD Hospital extortion case

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven individuals, including the main accused Moin Uddin, in connection with an alleged extortion case at the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital in the Shyamoli area of the capital.

The arrests were made late Saturday night (April 12). Among the arrested are Md. Falan Mia (42), Md. Rubel (42), Md. Swapon Kazi (36), and Md. Shaon Hossain (25). Authorities confirmed that the prime accused Moin Uddin was detained from Kalia in Narail district.

Earlier, a case was filed on April 11 at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, naming Moin Uddin as the number one accused, along with seven to eight unidentified individuals. The complaint was lodged by CKD Hospital OT in-charge Abu Hanif.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred on Friday morning (April 10) around 9:00 AM, when former Jubo Dal leader Moin Uddin allegedly led a group into the hospital premises, creating panic and attempting to establish dominance.

The report further states that CCTV footage shows Moin Uddin entering the hospital with his associates, issuing threats to staff and officials. He is also seen allegedly entering the operation theatre (OT) forcefully in violation of hospital rules, and physically assaulting a staff member named Hanif.

Hospital sources claimed that since August 5, Moin Uddin had repeatedly harassed renowned physician Professor Dr. Kamrul Islam, attempting to pressure the hospital administration. He allegedly tried to force supply contracts for medical equipment and other goods, and demanded BDT 500,000 (5 lakh taka) as extortion money.

He also allegedly pressured the hospital to remove staff perceived as supporters of the previous government.

Professor Dr. Kamrul Islam stated that despite seeking help from local police and political leaders, no effective assistance was received.

He further alleged that Moin Uddin had repeatedly arrived at the hospital with 50–60 people, spreading false narratives against him and attempting to destabilize the hospital environment.

Police and RAB confirmed that legal proceedings are ongoing and further investigation is in progress.
