Chattogram Port Records Strong Growth in Revenue, Cargo Handling Amid Global Economic Slowdown

Despite ongoing global economic uncertainty, the Chittagong Port, widely regarded as the lifeline of Bangladesh’s economy, has posted significant growth in both revenue and container handling, according to official data.

Port authorities said improved service efficiency, cost control measures, and infrastructure upgrades have contributed to the steady rise in performance indicators, including revenue surplus, container throughput, and operational capacity.

Revenue and Surplus Show Strong Uptrend

Between FY 2024–25 and 2025–26, the port’s revenue surplus increased by more than 44 percent.

  • Revenue (July 2024–May 2025): Tk 4,952.38 crore
  • Revenue (July 2025–May 2026): Tk 6,076.73 crore
  • Growth: Over 22 percent increase

During the same period, the port reported a surplus of Tk 4,287.46 crore, with total net surplus (after taxes and expenses) standing at around Tk 2,228 crore.

Over the past five fiscal years, the port’s highest surplus was recorded in 2025 at Tk 3,142.68 crore, reflecting consistent financial improvement.

Record Cargo and Container Handling

In 2025, the port achieved record-breaking operational performance:

  • Container handling: 3.40 million TEUs
  • Growth: 4.07 percent increase from 2024
  • Cargo handled: 138.15 million metric tons
  • Vessel movement: 4,273 ships (10.5 percent growth)

Officials said the improvement was driven by modern equipment, expanded yard capacity, and improved operational efficiency, including reduced vessel turnaround time on several occasions.

Digital Transformation and Efficiency Gains

The port has introduced several digital initiatives, including:

  • Online e-mute pass system
  • E-billing and e-payment facilities
  • Automated tracking systems for cargo movement

On December 23, 2025, a record 6,761 e-mute passes were issued in a single day.

Infrastructure Expansion and Future Plans

Authorities highlighted ongoing mega projects, including:

  • Matarbari Deep Sea Port project
  • Bay Terminal project worth Tk 13,525 crore
  • Expansion of yard capacity by 70,000 square meters

Officials believe these developments will transform Chattogram Port into a major regional transhipment hub.

Leadership Statement

Chairman of Chattogram Port Authority, Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, said the achievements reflect strong leadership, coordinated efforts, and improved management systems.

He added that reduced vessel turnaround time, enhanced terminal productivity, and digitalization have played a key role in boosting efficiency and reducing congestion.

The port authority said continued collaboration among customs, shipping agents, terminal operators, and logistics stakeholders will further strengthen Bangladesh’s trade competitiveness in the coming years.
