Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury Granted Bail in Attempted Murder Case

The court has granted bail to former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury in a case filed with Lalbagh Police Station over allegations of attempted murder.

On Sunday, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, Zakir Hossain, approved her bail petition upon hearing the defense plea and granted bail on a bond of Tk 50,000.

According to court sources, the judge issued the order on a conditional basis after the hearing, allowing the former Speaker to remain out of custody while the case proceedings continue.

“The bail was granted subject to conditions after completion of the hearing,” court officials said.

Lawyers confirmed that she must comply with all court-imposed conditions during the ongoing investigation.

Earlier Arrest and Custody

Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was arrested on April 7 from a relative’s residence in Dhaka’s capital. She was produced before the court on the same day, which sent her to jail. She had remained in custody since then.

Case Background

According to the case statement, the incident relates to an alleged attack during an anti-discrimination movement rally on July 18 last year in the Azimpur Government Colony area under Lalbagh Police Station.

Victim Md. Ashraful alias Fahim claimed he was participating in a procession when he was seriously injured by gunfire allegedly fired by the accused. His left eye was severely damaged and later became non-functional.

The victim filed a case with Lalbagh Police Station on July 17, naming several individuals, including the former Speaker.

The case has drawn significant political attention nationwide.

Ongoing Investigation

Lawyers stated that the investigation is still ongoing and authorities are collecting evidence. Despite the bail order, the judicial process will continue, and further directions may come based on investigation updates.

Analysts believe that recent cases linked to anti-discrimination movements are increasingly influencing both political and legal discussions in the country.

No immediate reaction was available from Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury after the bail order, though her legal team expressed hope that she would receive justice after a full investigation.
