A case has been filed following an incident at the Haripur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) office in Thakurgaon, where recruitment examination papers for a college staff position were forcibly taken amid mob activity. The case was registered at Haripur Police Station last night, naming six BNP leaders as accused and 35–40 others as unidentified defendants.
Incident Details
The case was filed by Harun Or Rashid, principal of Medanisagar Technical and BM College. The main accused is Jamal Uddin, president of Haripur Upazila BNP, along with Irfan Ali, Sajjad Hossain, Moklesur Rahman, Md. Faruk and Masud Rana.
The recruitment process was underway on Friday, led by the UNO of Haripur Upazila. The board was selecting staff for cleaning and ayah (care) positions at the college. Present at the board were:
- Principal Harun Or Rashid
- Representatives from the Technical Education Board: Jabed Ali
- Representative from the Directorate of Technical Education: Reza Hasan Mahmud
Eight candidates, four men and four women, participated in the written and oral examinations.
Disruption and Paper Seizure
During the proceedings, Jamal Uddin and his associates entered the UNO office, demanding the recruitment process be stopped. They intimidated the UNO and demanded a bribe. Upon refusal, they forcibly took the recruitment papers from the principal and board representatives.
Jamal Uddin, president of Haripur Upazila BNP, claimed:
“We had information that the UNO took money for recruitment. Our team went there to protest. When the UNO threatened to involve the police, I went there myself. A dispute arose regarding recruitment practices, and this case has been filed to tarnish my and the party’s reputation.”
Later, when the principal and board members attempted to file a complaint at the police station, Jamal and his associates dragged Harun Or Rashid and board member Motahara Parvin out of the station and threatened them against lodging the case. Police intervened, after which the accused fled the scene.
Police Statement
Abdul Hakim Azad, officer-in-charge of Haripur Police Station, said:
“I was on leave yesterday. Today I returned to duty. A case has been filed regarding the incident at the UNO office. The next steps will be taken as per procedure.”
This incident has sparked controversy over political interference and intimidation in recruitment processes.
