At Dhaka University (DU), a student named Pabel was assaulted and handed over to Shahbagh Police by members of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti late on Sunday night (March 8), following allegations of his links with the banned student organization Chhatra League. Pabel, a 2020–21 batch student of the Philosophy Department, was later sent to the hospital for initial treatment before being returned to the police station.
According to witnesses, Pabel was feeding several junior students at the BUET canteen and reportedly trying to influence them when Jatiya Chhatra Shakti’s General Secretary, Saifullah, Hasibur Rahman, and other leaders recognized and detained him.
Shahbagh Police confirmed that the student was brought to the station and treated for injuries. No official decision has yet been made on whether Pabel will face formal arrest or any legal action. The officer-in-charge was not present at the time, and further action will be decided after consultation.
DU Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed said he is aware of the incident but emphasized that any legal action will follow proper law. If Pabel is found guilty of any offense, he will be dealt with according to the law, and the university will coordinate with the police as required.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between rival student organizations at Dhaka University and raises concerns about student safety and campus law enforcement.
