A mobile court has fined “Life Care General Hospital” in Karpasdanga Bazar, Damurhuda Upazila, Chuadanga, Tk 2 lakh and ordered its temporary closure after authorities found multiple serious irregularities, including the use of a motorcycle fog light instead of a proper surgical light in the operating theatre.
The joint operation by the Damurhuda Upazila administration and the Health Department took place on Saturday afternoon, led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Shaheen Alam.
Officials reported that the clinic was run by Mamun or Rashid Shawon, posing as the director, and Masuma Ferdous Snigdha, claiming to be a gynaecologist. The two, reportedly husband and wife, are not registered doctors and had fled the clinic before the operation.
Health department sources said the clinic had been under scrutiny for various irregularities and fraudulent activities for some time. During the inspection, it was found that the operating theatre lacked proper modern equipment, with surgical procedures being performed using a motorcycle fog light, creating serious risks for patients.
Other violations included improper storage of food and medicines in the same refrigerator, and a general lack of necessary medical equipment, breaching health regulations.
“The institution had been providing medical services and operations without proper authorization for a long time. Evidence of multiple irregularities was found during the inspection,” said Damurhuda Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Moshiur Rahman.
Following the findings, the mobile court imposed a Tk 2 lakh fine and ordered the operating theatre sealed, suspending the clinic’s operations temporarily. Legal action against the fake doctor couple is under preparation.
Residents expressed concern, stating that fraudulent medical practices put lives at serious risk, and called for stricter monitoring and regular inspections of unauthorized clinics.
Chuadanga Civil Surgeon Dr. Hadi Zia Uddin Ahmed said the action was taken following new directives from the Health Ministry and confirmed that similar inspections and crackdowns will continue to ensure patient safety.
