PM Launches Nationwide Canal Re-Excavation Program in Dinajpur

Tarique Rahman, BNP Chairman, on Monday inaugurated a nationwide canal and waterway re-excavation programme aimed at environmental protection and boosting climate resilience.

The programme was officially launched through the excavation of the Sahapara Canal in the Balarampur area of Kaharole Upazila, Dinajpur. This initiative is part of the BNP’s election manifesto promises to restore rivers, canals, and water bodies across the country.

The project focuses on preserving water reservoirs, maintaining natural water flow, and taking long-term steps to address climate change impacts.

Earlier in the morning, Tarique Rahman arrived at Syedpur Airport in Nilphamari around 10:00 am, where leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate organizations welcomed him with flowers.

He then travelled towards Dinajpur in a special bulletproof bus, passing through Syedpur town before reaching the programme site.

The inauguration included the re-excavation of nearly 12 kilometres of the Sahapara Canal. At the same time, Tarique Rahman virtually inaugurated similar canal excavation and re-excavation programmes in 54 districts nationwide.

After the program, he will visit Faridpur Graveyard in Dinajpur town to pay respects at the graves of his relatives, including his grandfather,, the late Md. Iskandar Majumder; grandmother, the late Toyeba Majumder, and aunt Khurshid Jahan Haque.

Tarique Rahman’s visit has sparked widespread enthusiasm among party leaders and activists in Dinajpur and surrounding areas.

Following the day-long events, he is expected to return to Dhaka around 9:30 pm.
