Writ filed challenging removal of Ahsan H. Mansur as Bangladesh Bank Governor

Ahsan H. Mansur, Md. Mostakur Rahman

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the removal of Ahsan H. Mansur as the Governor of Bangladesh Bank and the subsequent appointment of Md. Mostakur Rahman to the post.

Advocate Abdullah Al Amin filed the petition on Thursday, March 5. The submission includes several media reports regarding the cancellation of the former governor’s remaining tenure.

The petition names the Finance Secretary, Bangladesh Bank (represented by the Governor), and Md. Mostakur Rahman as respondents.

The plea seeks a rule asking why the appointment of the new governor should not be declared illegal. Furthermore, it seeks a stay on the separate gazettes issued for the removal of the former governor and the appointment of the incumbent.

The interim government had appointed Ahsan H. Mansur as the Bangladesh Bank Governor on August 14, 2024, with his contract scheduled to conclude in August 2028. However, on February 25, the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance issued separate notifications appointing Md. Mostakur Rahman as the new governor and canceling the remaining term of Ahsan H. Mansur.
